Every so often, sport reveals its true heart not just in the victories tallied but in the resilience, the pressure, and the unwavering spirit of its athletes. Ruiru Golf Events 2025 did just that—delivering drama, disappointment, and soaring triumphs across 54 challenging holes at the revered par-73 Ruiru Sports Club course. This year, the championship didn’t just crown new heroes; it painted a riveting picture of a region on the rise in the golfing world.
The heart of East African golf beats at Ruiru
Spanning a meticulously maintained course and attracting 105 participants from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, and South Africa, the 2025 Ruiru Golf Events left no doubt that East African golf stands in a moment of growth and hunger. The event blended elite amateurs, top professionals, and a surge of young talent—all fighting for not just victory but valuable Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points and serious prize money.
This year’s event underscored a simple truth: Ruiru has become more than a tournament venue—it is a proving ground for ambition.
Lejirmah’s relentless spirit claims the Ruiru Open
In the spotlight, John Lejirmah delivered a performance that will echo throughout the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series. Fresh off a stinging playoff defeat to veteran Dismas Indiza during the Sunshine Development Tour at the same venue, Lejirmah could have faded. But that is not the makeup of a true contender. Instead, the Royal Nairobi Golf Club amateur showcased not only skill but also a deep reserve of composure and willpower.
Carding rounds of 69, 71, and a final three-under-par 70, Lejirmah secured the Ruiru Open at a total nine-under-par 210. His closest rival, Ebill Omollo (Vet Lab Sports Club), charged with four front-nine birdies and a trio of birdies erupting at the start of his back nine, but two costly bogeys saw him finish at six-under 213. Michael Karanga, the defending KAGC champion, faced a punishing front nine on the last day and, despite a eagle-boosted comeback, settled for third at four-under 215.
Lejirmah’s words after the win rang with authenticity: “It’s been a tough run, first losing to a playoff in the Sunshine Development Tour and now today Omollo giving me a run for my money, but I am really thankful for this win which means everything. But that’s golf—sometimes it tests you, and it’s not how hard you fall, but how focused you stay.”
Sunshine Tour brings regional stars to center stage
The Ruiru Golf Events 2025 also served as a dramatic second act for the new Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing. After a thrilling opener at Thika Greens—where Njoroge Kibugu finished 15-under-par—the action at Ruiru assembled a broader community of talent, providing a platform for East Africans to stake their claims on a world stage.
“We were thrilled with the level of competition at Thika Greens. Ruiru Sports Club presents a different test, and we are excited to see how the players respond,” reflected Tournament Director David Kihara. “This tour is about giving East African golfers a legitimate platform to grow and compete at global standards. There’s hunger, there’s belief, and we’re proud to be part of that journey.”

Regional pride, international flair
- Kenya’s contingent includes hopefuls like John Wangai, Mutahi Kibugu, David Wakhu, Simon Ngige, Jacob Okello, Nelson Simwa, Edwin Mudanyi, and Indiza,
- Uganda is represented by players such as Ronald Rugumayo, Ronald Otile, Kasozi Phillip, Hussein Bagalana, and Abraham Ainamani,
- Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, and even South Africa highlight the region’s growing integration within elite golf, showing depth and diversity at Ruiru Sports Club.
Yet, it is not only veterans crafting the narrative. Naomi Wafula, leading a strong women’s group, left her mark with a superb two-under-par 71, tying for fourth with Isaac Makokha. Their presence is symbolic and powerful: the next generation is arriving with confidence and ability.
Understanding Ruiru’s testing course
Ruiru’s par-73 layout doesn’t grant victory easily. The event held over 54 holes featured a 30-player cut after two rounds—a brutal culling that demanded focus from the start. The field, tested by the nuanced layout, felt every risky drive and nerve-testing putt. With a prize purse of Sh2 million and key points for advancement, the pressure was real and unrelenting.
Against the odds, under the spotlight
Sammy Mulama, who led with a dazzling five-under 68 that included seven birdies, learned how a single round can change fortunes. Slipping to a 79 before closing with a 74, he reminded fans how thin the line between glory and heartbreak can be. Ultimately, the leaderboard told a story of consistency and mental strength:
- John Lejirmah – 69, 71, 70 = 210
- Ebill Omollo – 74, 71, 68 = 213
- Michael Karanga – 70, 71, 74 = 215
- Naomi Wafula – 74, 72, 71 = 217
- Isaac Makokha – 73, 72, 72 = 217
- Elvis Muigua – 72, 70, 78 = 220
- Sammy Mulama – 68, 79, 74 = 221
