Gor Mahia FC – A legendary Kenyan football club
Gor Mahia FC is a professional football club based in Nairobi, Kenya. Besides having a rich football history, the club enjoys incredible support from its passionate fans and is highly popular among football enthusiasts. Commonly known as K'Ogalo (which means "descendant of Ogalo" in the Dholuo language), the club has won a record 21 Kenyan Premier League titles and lifted the FKF President’s Cup 11 times. Gor Mahia is also the only Kenyan team to have won a continental title, claiming the African Cup Winners' Cup in 1987, after previously reaching the final in 1979.
History
The club was officially founded on February 17, 1968, following the merger of Luo Union and Luo Sports Club (also known as Luo Stars). However, unofficially, the club had existed since 1915. Gor Mahia FC plays its home matches at Nairobi City Stadium, as well as Moi International Sports Centre and Nyayo National Stadium.
In its very first season, the club won the Kenyan league. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Gor Mahia maintained its dominance, securing multiple league titles and cup victories.
The 1990s and Beyond
The 1990s were not the best period for Gor Mahia. In 1996, the team endured its worst season, finishing in 8th place in the league. However, Gor Mahia quickly bounced back, reclaiming its position by winning numerous league and cup titles in the following years.
Symbols, colors, and anthem
The name "Gor Mahia" comes from a legendary healer from Kanyamwa, Ndhiwa, Homa Bay in Luo mythology. His full name was Gor Wuod Ogada Nyakwar Ogalo, and the nickname “Mahia” in Luo means “magic,” as he was known for performing mystical tricks. The team does not have an official anthem, but its colors are deeply tied to the cultural roots of the Luo people.
