The Wangari Warriors are a distinctive women’s football team named in honor of Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai, formed to participate in the inaugural “Empower Mchezaji” seven-a-side tournament held at the Mashuuru Sports Complex in Kajiado, Kenya, in July 2025. Drawing players from across Kenya’s women’s leagues alongside one male ally per team, they embodied unity and advocacy against gender-based violence. The Warriors staged a dramatic comeback to draw 1–1 in regulation and ultimately clinched the title via a 2–1 penalty shootout victory over the Chelagat Chargers. Their goalkeeper, Valentine Khwaka, saved two spot-kicks, while Corazone Aquino scored the equalizer. The event emphasized solidarity and support for women athletes.
