WAFCON, short for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, is the premier women’s football tournament in Africa, organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Held every two years, it brings together top national teams from across the continent to compete for the title of African champions. Since its official launch in 1998, WAFCON has played a critical role in elevating the profile of women’s football in Africa, offering a stage for talent, visibility, and continental rivalry.
The tournament has grown steadily in competitiveness and popularity, with an expanded format introduced in 2022 featuring 12 teams instead of 8. It also serves as a qualifying pathway for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, giving African teams the opportunity to shine on the global stage. Nations like Nigeria, South Africa, and Cameroon have traditionally dominated, but recent editions have seen rising teams such as Morocco and Zambia challenge for top honors.
