CECAFA

CECAFA, the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations, is the oldest football organization in Africa, bringing together national federations from across East and Central Africa. Formed officially in 1973 but with roots dating back to the 1920s, CECAFA plays a key role in promoting football development in the region. Its members include countries like Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, and others.

The organization runs several major tournaments, including the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup for men’s national teams—the longest-running international football competition in Africa. It also organizes competitions for women’s national teams, youth categories (U-17 and U-20), club sides, and increasingly supports women’s football, futsal, beach soccer, and school-level events.
