The Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) has announced strong actions against the growing problem of gambling addiction and illegal practices in the industry. Starting from April 29, 2025, a 30-day total ban on gambling advertisements across all media platforms is in effect throughout Kenya. At the same time, 58 unauthorized betting websites have been ordered to shut down immediately.
Ban on gambling advertisements
The new rules cover all forms of advertising – from TV, radio, and social media to print media, billboards, SMS, email, push notifications, and marketing involving celebrities and influencers. The goal is to protect vulnerable groups, especially youth, who are increasingly exposed to gambling during the so-called “watershed period” (5:00 am to 10:00 pm).
BCLB highlights that these ads often falsely present gambling as an investment or a quick way to get rich, which leads to serious social and financial consequences for families and communities.
Shutdown of illegal websites
At the same time, BCLB has ordered the immediate closure of 58 betting websites operating without the required licenses. These platforms accepted deposits but refused to pay out winnings, putting users at financial risk. Mobile service providers have been instructed to block all Pay Bill numbers linked to these websites.
BCLB is responding to numerous citizen complaints and public outrage over the actions of these platforms, which not only broke the law but also exploited players through dishonest betting schemes.
Cooperation and next steps
Other government agencies are also involved, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), which has promised close cooperation with BCLB to improve oversight of the gambling sector.
BCLB encourages reporting of any illegal gambling activities and announces further steps to tighten regulations and introduce new rules to protect the public.
