Basic Rules of Poker

Texas Hold’em is one of the most popular poker online games in Kenya. Here’s how it works: You are dealt two cards for yourself, known as hole cards. Then, five more cards are dealt out into the center for everyone to use. These are also known as “community cards.” You can use any mix of your two cards and the five on the table to make your best five-card hand.  

The game plays out in four rounds: 

• Pre-flop: First, you bet based on just your two cards. This is called “pre-flop.” 
• Flop: The three community cards hit the table. This is the “flop.” It’s time for more betting. 
• Turn: This is when the fourth community card shows up. Another betting round follows. 
• River: This is the last community card. One last round of betting, and then it’s showtime. 

Players reveal their poker hands after the final round of betting, and the best one wins the pot. 

Omaha 

Omaha is similar to Texas Hold’em, but with a few twists that make it interesting. In this version, you get four cards just for you instead of two. Plus, there are still five cards face-up on the table for everyone. But here’s the deal: you have to use exactly two of your cards and three from the table to make your best five-card hand.  

There are two main ways to play Omaha: 

• Omaha Hi: This one’s straightforward – the best five-card hand takes all the poker chips. 
• Omaha Hi-Lo: Now, this is where it gets fun. The pot gets split between the best high hand and the best low hand (if a qualifying low hand exists).

Setting the Blinds and Antes 

Blinds and antes are like forced bets that get the action going and build up the pot. The setup changes depending on what kind of poker you’re playing: 

• Blinds 
  They are common in games like Texas Hold’em and Omaha. Two players to the left of the dealer have to put in blinds before anyone gets cards. The first person puts in the “small blind,” and the next one puts in the “big blind,” which is usually double the small one. This way, there’s some cash in the pot to start things off. 
• Antes 
  Some poker games, especially tournaments, use these. Everyone at the table has to chip in a small bet before the hand starts. It’s a way to beef up the pot and make people play more aggressively. In games that use both blinds and antes, the antes are usually smaller and just add to the overall pot. 

Dealing the Cards

• Picking the dealer: In some games, you usually pass the dealer job around the table clockwise after each hand. There’s usually a little button to show who’s dealing. But in casinos or pro games, they’ve got a special dealer to handle all that.

Newbies often fall into the trap of playing too many hands. Stick to the stronger hands and ditch the weak ones. When you decide to play a hand, be aggressive—raise or bet rather than just calling. This puts the heat on your opponents and might make them fold, letting you win the pot. 

Pay Attention to Position 

Where you are at the table compared to the dealer really matters in poker. Being near the dealer button is sweet because you get to see what everyone else does before you make your move. Use this to your advantage—play more when you’re in a late spot, but be more careful when you’re upfront.
